SPOKANE, WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – Spokane authorities reported that three wildfires have destroyed at least 700 structures, prompting approximately 67,000 residents to evacuate. The fires—Old Trails, Autumn Lane, and Fairview—have consumed over 8,000 acres since Saturday. As of Monday night, officials confirmed there have been no fatalities or serious injuries. Over 1,000 firefighters remain actively battling flames and safeguarding neighborhoods within Spokane County. Fire management teams ranked this cluster among the highest-priority wildfire responses nationally.

Eastern Washington wildfires force 67,000 evacuations
Spokane wildfires force mass evacuations as crews defend homes and public infrastructure.

The wildfires spread from open land into populated areas on Spokane’s northern perimeter, fueled by strong winds and dry vegetation. The Old Trails Fire crossed the Spokane River and reached northwest neighborhoods within hours of ignition. Flames have destroyed homes, businesses, vehicles, and utility infrastructure across several communities. Infrared imagery indicates potential damage to hundreds of additional structures, though officials have not yet confirmed these figures. Smoke from the fires has blanketed Spokane, reducing visibility near active burn zones.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 37-year-old Aaron F. Farinacci on suspicion of first-degree arson on Monday. Authorities linked his arrest solely to the Old Trails Fire, which originated near Old Trails Road and Euclid Avenue. A court will determine the official charges, and the arrest does not imply guilt. Investigations into the causes of the Autumn Lane and Fairview fires are ongoing. No other arrests related to the Spokane-area wildfires have been reported.

    Evacuations Widen Throughout Spokane County

Large sections of northern and northwestern Spokane, along with neighboring communities, are under evacuation orders. The authorities evacuated patients from the Mann-Grandstaff Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center amid the escalating crisis. Spokane has opened its convention center as a shelter for displaced residents and their pets. Local community organizations are providing food, water, and essential supplies. Emergency services have also arranged child care, road closures, and public information campaigns for those affected.

Governor Bob Ferguson of Washington issued a statewide emergency declaration and activated the National Guard to assist as the fires continue to expand across eastern Washington. This order enables better coordination of personnel, equipment, and emergency aid across impacted counties. A burn ban remains in effect during the ongoing heat and drought conditions. The state has mobilized resources from multiple agencies and outside firefighting teams, while also requesting federal support due to high demand for firefighting efforts across the Pacific Northwest.

Firefighters Focus on Protecting Property and Critical Infrastructure

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources collaborated with local and federal teams to manage the Spokane Complex response. Aircraft have been dropping retardant, and ground crews are utilizing engines, hand lines, and heavy equipment near threatened homes. Efforts are also underway to safeguard roads, transmission lines, hospitals, and water treatment facilities. On Monday, fire officials reported no containment of the three Spokane-area fires. Road closures and restrictions at Riverside and Mount Spokane state parks remain in effect.

Initial days of the emergency saw power systems damaged, leaving thousands without electricity. Utility crews are gradually restoring power where feasible, while emergency teams continue to secure hazardous areas. Officials have advised residents to adhere to evacuation notices and avoid flying drones near firefighting aircraft. Updated maps and alerts are being maintained as fire boundaries evolve. Damage assessment teams are inspecting burned neighborhoods and verifying property losses before releasing detailed figures.
