During the most recent full reporting week, teams documented 567 infections and 296 deaths, marking the highest weekly figures since the outbreak’s onset. Contact Tracing Falls Short of Requirements
Authorities have identified 17,863 contacts in the five affected provinces. Of these, 13,455 are under active monitoring, leaving thousands without follow-up. The outbreak has affected 151 health workers and resulted in 44 deaths; meanwhile, 68 health workers have recovered. The government, along with its partners, continues to bolster laboratory testing, patient care, and infection prevention measures. They also support logistics, safe burial practices, public awareness campaigns, and community outreach in areas experiencing active transmission.
Bundibugyo virus disease spreads through contact with infected blood, bodily fluids, tissues, or contaminated materials. Symptoms may emerge between two and 21 days following exposure. Patients do not transmit the virus before symptoms appear. Early signs include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headaches, and sore throat. Currently, there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for this strain. Regional Health Authorities Remain Vigilant
The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern on May 17. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention issued a continent-wide emergency declaration the following day. Uganda concluded its own outbreak on July 28 after 42 days without local transmission. Despite this, authorities continue enhanced surveillance because cross-border movement persists in eastern DR Congo. Screening, preparedness, and laboratory activities are maintained in areas linked to affected regions.
By July 30, all affected nations reported a total of 3,626 cases and 1,589 deaths. Specifically, DR Congo accounted for 3,605 cases, Uganda recorded 20, and France reported one.
