Almost 10,000 Deaths Linked to Heat in Germany According to Official Data

Berlin, Germany / RankWire.AI / – The Robert Koch Institute, Germany’s primary public health authority, has reported approximately 9,800 fatalities connected to heat during the first seven months of 2026. This figure represents the highest mid-summer death toll since the start of systematic tracking in 2016. Their surveillance data reveals that prolonged high temperatures from early April through July 19 resulted in record mortality levels. The institute, operating under the Federal Ministry of Health, indicated that the accumulated 2026 death count already surpasses the total number of deaths from any individual year over the past decade.

Nearly 10000 heat related deaths confirmed in Germany
Epidemiologists evaluate heat stress impacts on vulnerable demographics in municipal areas.

The sharp rise in fatalities was primarily driven by an intense nationwide heatwave in late June, with temperatures repeatedly hitting nearly 40 degrees Celsius across several federal states. Public health epidemiologists’ surveillance models attribute over 5,000 deaths directly to this extreme weather event. Data shows approximately 810 heat-related deaths occurred between early April and June 21, followed by a spike of 4,310 deaths from June 22 to June 28. The German Weather Service confirmed that on June 27, 46 weather stations recorded temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

Throughout July, mortality rates remained elevated as persistent heat affected central and western Europe. According to estimates from the Robert Koch Institute, around 7,900 heat-related deaths happened from early April to July 12. An additional 1,900 deaths were recorded during the week of July 13 to July 19, bringing the total to 9,800. Compared to the previous record of approximately 8,900 heat-related deaths in 2018, these numbers indicate a significant increase. The 2026 figures also greatly exceed the average annual toll of about 2,900 heat-related fatalities documented between 2023 and 2025.

Public Health Authority Reports Record-breaking Heatwave Mortality Figures

Demographic analysis by federal health experts highlights that older adults experienced the highest health risks during this extended period of extreme heat. Of the approximately 9,800 total deaths, around 7,880 occurred among individuals aged 75 and older, representing most of the recorded cases. A detailed age breakdown shows about 2,950 fatalities among those aged 85 and above, roughly 1,320 among 75 to 84-year-olds, about 550 among 65 to 74-year-olds, and close to 300 among residents under 65. The report also notes a higher mortality rate among women than men, reflecting demographic proportions.

Medical experts at the institute emphasized that extreme heat rarely appears as the sole cause on death certificates. Instead, prolonged exposure to high temperatures worsens pre-existing health conditions, significantly increasing the risk of fatal cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and metabolic complications. Epidemiologists rely on mortality monitoring models that combine death registration data from the Federal Statistical Office with daily meteorological records to estimate excess deaths attributable to heat stress. The agency pointed out that elevated nighttime temperatures hinder adequate cooling, placing vulnerable individuals under severe strain.

Older Adults Are Especially Susceptible to Heat-Related Health Risks

Forecasts from national weather agencies indicate that high temperature conditions are expected to persist across large parts of Germany through the remainder of summer. The weather service predicts daily maximum temperatures between 35 and 39 degrees Celsius over wide regions, with localized peaks reaching up to 40 degrees. In response, public health officials and local health departments continue to issue emergency advisories, urging care homes, healthcare providers, and families to monitor elderly residents carefully, keep indoor cooling systems operational, and ensure sufficient hydration during the hottest hours.

This comprehensive data release underscores the mounting public health challenge posed by recurrent extreme weather events in central Europe. Healthcare systems and municipal authorities are actively adapting emergency heat action plans. As surveillance persists through the summer, the nearly 10,000 heat-related deaths documented in Germany serve as vital baseline data for federal health authorities, environmental agencies, and emergency responders. Monitoring is expected to continue into September, with authorities evaluating long-term interventions and urban cooling measures to reduce heat-related health risks among vulnerable populations in future years.
