MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s overall electricity generation increased by 4.3% year-on-year through August 2026, reaching a total of 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours. During the same period in 2025, output was 35,935.3 GWh. Data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated growth across multiple governorates. The rise contributed approximately 1,546.5 GWh to the national output in the first eight months of the year. In August alone, production hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate experienced the most significant increase in total electricity generation, with a year-on-year rise of 204.8%. Al Dakhiliyah followed with a growth of 44.1%, and Al Wusta saw an 8.4% boost. Electricity output in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah rose by 5.5%. Dhofar also demonstrated growth, with an increase of 4.6% from January to August. The data reflected expansion in most regions covered by the national statistics.
Conversely, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a combined decrease of 16.4% in electricity production. Musandam’s output was 376.0 GWh, showing no significant change from the same period in 2025. The regional figures revealed considerable variation in electricity growth across Oman during this timeframe. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classified these figures as preliminary. The data encompass electricity generation through the end of August 2026.
Net electricity output increases by 4.6%
Oman’s net electricity production rose by 4.6% through August, reaching 36,463.9 GWh compared to 34,871.8 GWh in the previous year. This figure includes regional purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat again led the growth, with net production up by 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah grew by 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar reported increases of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net output grew by roughly 1,592.1 GWh year-on-year.
Net electricity generation in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.4% from the previous year. Meanwhile, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a decline of 16.6% in net output. Musandam’s net electricity production was 368.0 GWh, with an annual change rate of 0.0%. The regional figures largely followed the pattern seen in total electricity production. National net output remained above the levels recorded during the first eight months of 2025.
Water production declines across Oman
Oman’s water output dropped by 3.5% through August 2026, totaling 330.65 million cubic metres. During the same period in 2025, production was approximately 342.71 million cubic metres. Muscat experienced a 6.2% decrease, producing about 128.07 million cubic metres compared to roughly 136.57 million. Other governorates saw a 3.4% decline, with water production falling to about 149.90 million cubic metres from approximately 155.19 million during the same months last year.
Dhofar was the primary exception to the national downward trend, with water production reaching about 52.68 million cubic metres by August, up 3.4% from about 50.94 million a year earlier. These latest utility figures illustrate contrasting trends in electricity and water production during the first eight months of 2026. While electricity output increased at both total and net levels, overall water production remained below the same period in 2025.
