ATKA, ALASKA / RankWire.AI / – The Alaska Earthquake Center has reported that a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck southeast of Atka late Saturday in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands. The seismic activity was recorded at 7:36 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 8, which corresponds to 03:36 UTC on August 9. The quake’s epicenter was approximately 48 miles, or 77 kilometers, southeast of Atka. Seismologists indicated that the event occurred at a depth of roughly 10.6 miles, or 17 kilometers.

Magnitude 5.0 earthquake recorded southeast of Atka in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands.

According to data reviewed, the earthquake took place at coordinates 51.8286 degrees north and 173.2496 degrees west. It was classified as a local magnitude of 5.0. The event occurred in a remote segment of the Aleutian chain, far from Alaska’s major population centers. Atka is situated on Atka Island in the western part of the state, within a region characterized by frequent earthquakes driven by significant tectonic activity beneath the North Pacific.

The location of the quake also places it 48 miles southwest of Seguam Island, about 64 miles southwest of Amukta Pass, and 74 miles east of Mount Sergief. Nearby geographical features include Koniuji Island, Kasatochi Island, and Great Sitkin Island. The seismic data revealed this was a relatively shallow earthquake compared to deeper tremors common in the Aleutians. The measurements obtained primarily define the magnitude 5.0 event in Alaska.

Seismic activity remains intense in the Aleutian region

The Aleutian Arc stands as one of Alaska’s most seismically active zones. The region experiences subduction, as the Pacific Plate moves beneath the North American Plate along this extensive boundary. This process, known as subduction, generates earthquakes at various depths and contributes to the high seismicity in Alaska. The Aleutian Islands are the site of thousands of tremors annually. Statewide monitoring networks continually track these seismic events, providing updates on their locations, magnitudes, and depths following scientific review of incoming data.

Alaska has experienced some of the strongest earthquakes in recent history, including a magnitude 8.6 event in the Andreanof Islands in 1957 and a magnitude 8.7 earthquake in the Rat Islands in 1965. Other significant quakes occurred in the Andreanof Islands in 1986 and 1996. These historical instances highlight ongoing seismic activity along the plate boundary beneath the Aleutian chain, which remains a hotspot for major earthquakes.

    Ongoing seismic monitoring in Alaska

Earthquakes in the Aleutians originate from various geological settings, including the primary plate boundary between the Pacific and North American Plates, as well as deeper within the subducting Pacific Plate. Shallow quakes can also develop within the crust of the overriding plate. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains national earthquake data alongside regional seismic networks. These systems assist scientists in analyzing earthquake measurements and providing standardized information about seismic events across Alaska and the rest of the United States.

The recent magnitude 5.0 earthquake adds to the persistent seismic activity observed around the Aleutian Islands. The Alaska Earthquake Center manages a comprehensive statewide network that monitors ground motion from earthquakes and other seismic phenomena. Its review confirms the August 8 event southeast of Atka at a depth of 17 kilometers. This network also tracks seismic activity in remote areas where populations are sparse, enabling experts to locate and evaluate earthquakes across Alaska’s vast and seismically active landscape.
