ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES / RankWire.AI / – The International Fund for Houbara Conservation has unveiled a new support initiative aimed at Emirati houbara breeders during ADIHEX 2026. Designed to assist those managing current houbara breeding operations as well as those contemplating establishing new facilities, the program offers access to expert knowledge, hands-on training, and technical support. Its core emphasis is on ethical breeding practices, animal welfare, biosecurity measures, and effective management techniques within houbara breeding activities.
Ekthar Wildlife Development will oversee the initiative, handling its scientific and technical aspects. Additionally, Ekthar functions as the strategic operational partner for IFHC’s centers, programs, and projects both within the UAE and globally. Drawing on extensive conservation and operational expertise, the initiative aims to support participating breeders. The launch took place at the 23rd Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition, an event that unites falconers, breeders, and organizations dedicated to wildlife, heritage, and conservation efforts.
Potential breeders wishing to join the initiative must undergo a detailed assessment process prior to acceptance. This evaluation will determine their preparedness and highlight areas where further assistance might be necessary. Submission of an application alone does not guarantee participation; applicants must complete the assessment for final approval. This structured process ensures a clear entry pathway for both seasoned breeders and those planning to develop new houbara breeding projects.
Training requirements define entry criteria
Those accepted will benefit from specialized education provided by Abu Dhabi Nature Academy. The program includes workshops, courses, and training sessions focusing on responsible houbara breeding, facility management, animal welfare, biosecurity, and operational best practices. Successful participants will earn certificates, and technical experts will continue offering support as breeders expand or enhance their operations.
In addition, eligible breeders may receive breeding birds on a right to use basis after fulfilling assessment and training requirements. This component complements the educational and technical support aspects of the program. IFHC emphasized that the initiative leverages its extensive experience in breeding and conservation to aid participating breeders. Mohamed Almotawa AlDhaheri, acting director general of IFHC, stated that the initiative links houbara breeding with knowledge, responsibility, and proven operational standards.
Expertise in conservation enhances breeder development
This new program extends IFHC’s engagement with those involved in houbara breeding and the cultural traditions associated with the species. Over the past four decades, the organization has been active in houbara conservation through research, captive breeding, releases, and international collaborations. In 2025, IFHC reported an annual output of 107,808 houbara birds, and a total production of 996,064 since the start of its conservation efforts, with 598,314 released across 18 countries within the species’ native range.
Breeders interested in participating can register via the Houbara Breeders Support Initiative platform or through the IFHC and Ekthar displays at ADIHEX 2026. The event served as the launch platform and provided direct access to specialists involved in executing the program. Following registration, applicants must go through assessment and receive final approval to access support. Qualified breeders will then be able to benefit from training, technical guidance, and, if eligible, breeding birds under the program’s right to use scheme.
