BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – The Belgian public health institute Sciensano reports that obesity was connected to 9,509 fatalities in Belgium in 2022, making up 8.2 percent of the country’s overall death toll. This marks the first occasion on which public health experts in Belgium have systematically quantified mortality directly linked to a high body mass index (BMI). The report highlights that weight-related health issues resulted in more than one death every hour nationwide. Additionally, the data indicates that high BMI led to over 150,000 years of life lost across various age groups in a single year.

Obesity linked to 8.2% of Belgium deaths in new health report
Scientific researchers study cardiovascular disease data to improve public health prevention.

This extensive epidemiological study delved into the primary causes of death to understand how increased BMI contributes to chronic illnesses. The analysis identified cardiovascular problems as the leading cause, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 deaths. Neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, accounted for 1,652 fatalities, ranking second. The report also noted cerebrovascular diseases in 1,171 cases, along with significant figures from chronic kidney disease and several digestive cancers.

Breakdowns by demographics reveal that the risk of death associated with excess weight rises considerably with age. Those aged 65 and above experienced the highest incidence of health issues related to obesity. Gender differences showed that male mortality rates generally surpassed those of females in most age brackets. However, women aged 85 and older recorded higher overall death rates, a trend epidemiologists attribute to their longer average lifespan.

Sciensano’s First Quantification of Obesity-Related Mortality in Belgium

Regional analysis within Belgium revealed notable disparities in death rates associated with obesity. The southern region of Wallonia reported the highest mortality rate, with 95.21 deaths per 100,000 residents. The Brussels-Capital Region followed, with an age-standardized rate of 85 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Flanders registered the lowest rate at 73.60 deaths per 100,000. Experts suggest these regional variations reflect socioeconomic differences, dietary habits, and healthcare accessibility across Belgium’s federal regions.

This data release coincides with policy evaluations overseen by the Federal Public Service Health, which manages Belgium’s national health strategies. Authorities are leveraging these findings to gauge the long-term economic impact of chronic non-communicable diseases on the healthcare system. The research used a methodology called population attributable fraction to estimate disease-specific mortality, providing a foundation for future preventive measures.

Over Two Thousand Deaths in Belgium Linked to Coronary Heart Disease

On a European scale, institutions like the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitor similar metabolic risk factors to coordinate policy responses across countries. The Belgian report aligns with broader European Union health objectives aimed at reducing early mortality from non-communicable illnesses. The World Health Organization continues to recommend integrated strategies involving public education, nutritional labeling, and early clinical intervention to address metabolic risks.

The research provides an evidence base for health authorities seeking to lower high BMI prevalence across Western Europe. By quantifying both death counts and years of life lost, policymakers can better target screening, intervention programs, and lifestyle initiatives. As regional and national health agencies analyze the findings, there will likely be an increased focus on preventive care to curb the rise of chronic diseases nationwide.
