South Korea Initiates 45-Day Arctic Container Ship Trial En Route to Europe

BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA / RankWire.AI / – South Korea has embarked on its inaugural Arctic transit trial with a container vessel heading to Europe. The 2,758-TEU PanStar Acro departed from Busan New Port around 9 p.m. on August 22. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries verified the departure and announced the route schedule. The vessel plans to navigate through the Northern Sea Route, making stops at three European ports. The entire round trip is expected to take 45 days, concluding back in Busan on October 5.

South Korea launches Arctic container ship trial to Europe
South Korea’s Arctic container trial links Busan with major European ports.

PanStar Line Dot Com is operating the ship, which during this Arctic shipping trial is carrying a total of 837 TEU. Of this, approximately 737 TEU comprises commercial cargo, including chemicals, used vehicles, and automotive components. Additionally, the load includes 100 empty containers. The vessel is anticipated to reach Arctic waters around August 30, with the segment through the ice expected to conclude around September 7. Officials estimate the Arctic segment spans roughly 6,400 kilometers.

According to the official schedule, the ship will dock at Felixstowe in the United Kingdom on September 9. Rotterdam in the Netherlands is next on September 11, followed by Gdansk in Poland on September 15. Afterward, the vessel will return to South Korea via the same Arctic route. The distance from Busan to Rotterdam via this path is approximately 13,000 kilometers. Throughout the voyage, operational data will be collected for analysis.

Trial involves transporting commercial goods to Europe

Before departure, the captain and navigation officers completed specialized polar operations training. An experienced polar navigator, who previously served aboard South Korea’s Araon icebreaker research vessel, joined as chief officer. The preparatory process also included insurance arrangements, emergency protocols, and administrative procedures for the journey. Authorities held consultations with relevant countries and organizations prior to departure. During the Arctic crossing, a 24-hour communication system will ensure the vessel remains connected.

This voyage represents South Korea’s first attempt at a container ship using the Northern Sea Route. Although Korean shipping firms have operated other vessel types—such as bulk carriers and tankers—in Arctic waters, this is the first Korean Arctic project since 2016. Unlike previous trials, this shipment carries real commercial cargo instead of an empty test. The aim is to gather technical, environmental, and commercial data related to container shipping through Arctic regions.

Operational data collection on northern route underway

Preparations for this voyage started earlier in 2026 with a joint public-private Arctic shipping council. The participating carrier was selected through a competitive process held in May. Subsequent steps involved ensuring vessel readiness, cargo arrangements, crew staffing, insurance, and emergency response protocols. Administrative procedures necessary for international navigation were also completed ahead of the August departure from Busan and the planned passage over the Russian northern waters.

The government classifies this endeavor as a trial operation rather than a routine container service. During the 45-day journey, officials will monitor data points such as sailing distance, duration, fuel use, and operating costs. The project will also assess cargo demand and practical logistics associated with container shipping in Arctic conditions. The scheduled calls at European ports will facilitate commercial cargo movements alongside the navigation test. The PanStar Acro is expected to return to Busan New Port around October 5, marking the completion of this experimental voyage.
